The sand tiger shark (Carcharias taurus), also known as, grey nurse shark, spotted ragged-tooth shark, or blue-nurse sand tiger, is one of our favorite species! Unlike other sharks, the sand tiger can gulp air from the surface, allowing it to be suspended in the water column with very little effort. You may also have heard about a shark species that feeds on its siblings in the womb. Well that’s the sand tiger shark! During pregnancy, the most developed embryo will feed on its siblings, a reproductive strategy that’s well known in these sharks! The sand tiger is categorized as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
