We sat down with biologist and outreach coordinator from Inwater Research Group, Annessia Michaels to learn more about her career and how IRG works to promote conservation of coastal habitats and marine life through scientific research and education.
Please explain how you and the Inwater Research Group contribute to ocean conservation and education.
- For many years, Inwater Research has conducted in-water assessments of sea turtles to contribute invaluable data to marine conservation efforts. Our research is then translated into educational lessons that can be used by students and teachers across the globe. We continue to increase our reach to promote sea turtle conservation in today's world.
What is your background?
- I have a Bachelor's degree in Marine Science and a Master's degree in Marine Conservation. I have been monitoring sea turtle nesting beaches for about 3 years. Most recently, I have joined the team at Inwater Research Group where I work as a biologist, outreach coordinator, and social media specialist.
How did you choose this career path?
- Ever since I was little, I knew I wanted to be a marine biologist. While I was in school, I took many different classes and internships that sparked my interest in sea turtles. Since then, I have worked towards a career as a sea turtle biologist.
What is your favorite part of your job?
- My favorite part of working at Inwater Research Group is that I get to research sea turtles and other marine life every day, and then I get to share that information and inspire the public to promote sea turtle conservation.
What are your future goals and future goals of Inwater Research Group?
- I aspire to grow my experience and knowledge on sea turtle biology and conservation so that I may contribute my efforts to bettering our organization. As a group, we strive to promote Inwater Research Group so that more people are aware of our contribution to sea turtle conservation.
What advice do you have for others who may be interested in this field?
- My best advice would be to gain as much experience as possible. Although it's often difficult in the marine science field, working internships and part-time positions are a great way to get the experience you need while making valuable connections that may lead to future positions.
What inspires you and who is your ocean or environmental hero?
- The ever increasing need for conservation of our oceans and marine life inspires me to keep going. Knowing that our research and conservation efforts are contributing to this cause motivates me to work hard towards a better future for our oceans. Charles Darwin in my environmental hero.
